LeadEPC was contracted during 2016 to replace the redundant 3.3KV Variable Speed Drive for the Reducing Mill of the Rod Mill at ArcelorMittal, Newcastle works. The RM has a 2.5MW, 3.3KV motor. A fully regenerative solution was required. An ABB ACS6000 Drive Unit was implemented. The ACS6000 Drive is water cooled. The functionality of the Main Drive was checked in Switzerland before it was shipped to South Africa.

Scope of Work:

  • New ABB ACS6000 Water Cooled regenerative Drive for RM.
  • New ABB ACS880, 400V Drive for Layering Head.
  • New ABB ACS880, 400V Drive Pinch Roll.
  • New Fanuc PLC System.
  • 400V LV Switchgear.
  • The project was implemented during a 10 day Shutdown period.
  • LeadEPC implemented a turnkey solution inclusive of Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning and Hand-over.
